- Plantain salve
Plantain salve, used for numerous skin problems. Another favourite of mine! After reading about how great plantain is for many different things, I thought I would give making a salve a shot. I don't like the greasy feeling of most salves I have tried so I decided to play around with different oils and consistencies and came up with something I really like. I like a salve that is light and non-greasy but still heavy enough to do the job. A bonus is it smells like banana bread and this plant is definitely not a banana.
I spend a lot of time in the spring, summer and fall foraging and harvesting different plants from the wilds of the Yukon and drying them. This way I can have products with the least amount of pollution, pesticides, etc that I can find and my backroom will smell great for most of that time. I have infused coconut and almond oils with plantain for a lighter oil feel and I really love the smell, almost a warm banana scent and this plantain is not the banana. I have made them so that they are not as hard as salves call for as well so that you still have the beeswax to hold in the moisture but is soft enough that you don't have to dig to get some out and makes it easier to spread.
Plantain, when used in oils and treated topically, can improve the healing process of treating all sorts of skin irritation from sunburns, stings, poison ivy, rashes, burns, blisters, cuts and rashes, to insect bites. It can also act as a natural anti-inflammatory and used for swollen joints, sore muscles, sprains and sore feet.
Coconut Oil has fatty acids as well as other naturally occurring properties which help to keep skin moisturized and help correct uneven skin tone. After regular use, a notice of the increase in skin buoyancy is one such moisturizing benefit.
Sweet Almond oil works as a facial lubricant to help dislodge impurities and replenish skin with high doses of Vitamin A to curb breakouts. It is also beneficial oil for those with sensitive skin.
The list of the healing properties of a plantain is fairly long, my plans for this are its help in reducing swelling and itch from mosquito bites for my pregnant daughter this summer as she has nasty reactions to mosquito bites and we have a rather numerous amount of large ones every year and she suffers every year ....this is a definite in my first aid box for my daughter and grandkids who seem to be tasty meals.
